Likeable, Credible, Dependable — a trust model for stronger relationships

LiCreDep: Likeable, Credible, Dependable. It’s a simple way to think about trust — not as one quality, but as three that work together. Most people are naturally strong in one or two of these and quietly weaker in the third, and that imbalance is often exactly what’s holding a relationship back, at work or at home.

The three components

Likeable
Whether people experience you as warm, relatable, and easy to be around. It's not about being universally charming — it's the sense that someone wants to keep talking to you, built through genuine curiosity, warmth, and matching the other person's energy rather than performing for them.
Credible
Whether what you say holds up. Credibility comes from accuracy, consistency, and expertise that shows through your actions rather than your claims about yourself — people trust what you say once they've seen it hold up more than once.
Dependable
Whether people can count on you to do what you said you'd do. This is the follow-through layer — clear commitments, timely follow-up, and keeping promises, especially the small ones nobody's watching.

Why all three matter together

Each quality compensates for the others’ blind spots. Likeable without credible can come across as charming but shallow. Credible without dependable earns respect that erodes the moment you miss what you promised. Dependable without likeable can feel transactional — reliable, but cold. Real trust, the kind that makes relationships stronger over time, comes from all three working together, not any one on its own.

Where it shows up

  • At work, in how colleagues, managers, and clients decide whether to bring you into the next conversation.
  • In friendships and family, in whether people feel comfortable being honest with you.
  • In leadership, in whether a team follows you because they have to, or because they trust you.
